Margaret Norwood, Chris and Lynne Perry, John & Daphne Williams Act 1 The Piazzetta, Venice Marco & Giuseppe have finally decided to choose their brides, so the contadine are busy preparing their floral tributes, in the hope they will be lucky. The gondoliers leave this to impartial fate, and with much rejoicing, they head off to the marriage ceremony. The impoverished Duke of Plaza Toro and his entourage arrive at Venice to seek Don Alhambra. He informs his daughter that she was wed, in babyhood, to the infant son of the wealthy King of Barataria. This child was kidnapped, taken to Venice and was brought up as a gondolier. But which one is it? Don Alhambra will persuade the child's nurse to reveal all. The newly married gondoliers are celebrating when they are approached by Don Alhambra who reveals one of them is a King. Both are to go to Barataria to rule jointly - for the moment - but they must leave behind their wives. *********** There will be an interval of 15 minutes between Act One and Act Two. The Raffle will be drawn during the performance and the winning numbers will be displayed in the Foyer after the performance
************ Act 2 Pavilion in the palace of Barataria Three months have passed. Marco and Giuseppe rule at the Royal Palace but all is not well. They miss their wives. The contadine duly arrive and the event is to be celebrated by a dance, which is interrupted by the arrival of Don Alhambra. He is unhappy with the Republican way that the Baratarian court is being ruled and he explains why it will not work. He also reveals one of them is already married. They are overheard by Gianetta and Tessa, who are not happy to learn that neither will be Queen. The Ducal party arrive in great state and the now wealthy Duke introduces Casilda and proceeds to give the two kings a lesson in etiquette. The infant King's nurse (who is Luiz's mother) arrives in Barataria and reveals the true identity of the King, to the pleasure and happiness of the people involved. All ends well and the gondoliers and their wives celebrate once more. Date 1750
